"Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome"  Booker T. Washington

This past week, Stacy Darga gave an update on the Community Schools initiative. This partnership provides quality out of school programming for students and their parents.  There is evidence that students that participate in this after school programming have higher attendance rates, higher math and reading scores and a lower number of discipline referrals.  Sun Prairie Rotary provided a grant in 2015 to help fund the Westside (Buena Vista) Community School.  Kids are able to learn about engineering and grew a community garden this year.  The produce was used in the program and offered to families at the school.  Other programs included the International club where families learned more about the cultures of individual students and English in the schools.  This program gives the non English speaking parents an opportunity to learn English and is taught by the Literacy Network from Madison.

The community schools are looking for a program manager and continue to need financial support.  If you are interested in learning more or helping, contact Stacy Darga at Westside School.
